Dear Buyer,My agent has asked me to describe what it is like to live at 1692 East Ashley. I have lived here since 1978 and I must say that the home is a pleasure every day. It?s position on the lot gives it an inordinate amount of privacy. I planted vegetative screens to the sides years ago that have subsequently matured so that the feeling out the windows is one of nature and openness. The lot is across the street from the ocean and clearly visible from the 16 x 20 front porch. There is a public access across the street. The rear of the house faces NW over about three miles of open Spartina wetlands. The lights of Charleston and the Ravenel Bridge light the sky. You can watch ship traffic come and go from the back deck. The depth of field and sense of horizon is accentuated by the fact that just the end of Long Island peaks into the left side of the view so that sunsets have trees to silhouette. There is a tidal creek behind the house and a small boat on a boat lift allows me to scoot out to Lighthouse Inlet when there is sufficient water. Lighthouse inlet is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with the Morris Island Lighthouse standing some quarter of a mile off shore and keeping watch over the birds and porpoises as they celebrate the end of the day. Spend an hour or two there on warm Summer?s evening with a glass of wine and I think you?ll agree that it is a little of Heaven right here on earth. The house itself is quite airy with a lot of windows and great views. The house construction utilizes 3? X 12? heart pine beams as both structural support and decorative elements to the nine foot ceilings. The house was constructed in 1972 but totally stripped back to the studs and totally remodeled in 1990. During that refitting, I added a FROG above the living area that is great for TV and Office space. I also added 16 x 16 bath addition. The bath addition makes the bedroom/bath suite a 30 x 14 room with the bedroom and bath separated by only a see through fireplace. The toilet and bidet are in a separate enclosed corner. There are lots of curved walls and arches to give the room a sensuous feel. It has marble horizontal surfaces for the jetted tub deck and the vanity and a marble 4 x 6 two person shower all of which overlooks the three miles of spartina wetland I mentioned. So ?no curtains necessary as your nearest neighbor is a great distance away. All of this makes for a bath suite that is a great way to start or end a day. The living room/dining/kitchen area is very open and features a wood burning fireplace, central speaker control, and custom kitchen cabinets. There is a two door connection to the front and rear porches that makes entertaining easy. There is one other bedroom on the main floor along with a half bath and a laundry center. There are two bedrooms and a full bath on the ground floor as well as a room that might be made into a small kitchenette for a mother in law apartment. I think of it as a very romantic house and a house that makes it easier to breathe in. It is open and light and full of fun and playfulness. I hope that it brings you as much joy as it has me.
